I was visiting a relative who was very apologetic while serving me tea as she could not find the Knick knacks boxes for me to eat, purchased a day before. Just then her two kids entered the house returning from school. They said their hellos to me and were going to their room when their mom asked them if anyone knew where the Knick knacks boxes are.

The younger kid came back sat down and said mom let me tell you a story. Once upon a time not long back may be some time yesterday I was hungry and I was exploring the kitchen and what happened next was Knick knacks were in my company. I was not alone in consuming the Knick knacks my elder brother took some as ransom to remain silent. His witty response generated a thought to work on a topic “The story teller in you”

Everyone has a story to tell; a narrative true or fictitious, in prose or verse designed to interest, amuse or instruct the hearer or the reader. Train the self to take the time to know someone’s story or create one version of yours.

Story telling is about connecting to other people. Through stories one can find a common ground, empathy and understanding. Story telling has been the oldest form of education. I still have great memories now over 55 years on lessons from a subject moral science taught in school still imbibed at back of my brain as a reflex memory for our moral behavior in testing times.

Any good story at first increases the neural activity fivefold. The city of our mind gets illuminated as our brain runs on electrical pulses. They cause real and measurable reactions in brain’s connections and chemistry. Scientific research shows that stories help to stimulate neurological centers of the brain helping us feel more care and concern for others people’s feeling and experiences. Chemical Locha an earlier post, talks of the neurochemical produced in our brain. (Refer site index)

Great parents and teachers tell their story so as to evoke the young minds attention, giving them something to remember, reconsider and reconnect long after the story is shared. By eliciting feelings like hope, fear and empathy, stories have the power to motivate to act or support an idea in a way facts alone cannot. The communicated stories bring dramatic changes in young minds in their learning’s and connect with others. They realize the quickest path between oneself and another person is a story, which could be shared as oral, visual, written or as digital storytelling.

Those who know how stories can mobilize, inspire, foster a sense of identity, connection stand out as good listeners and speakers. Public figures deprived of this learning stand out otherwise.

Expressions of lies, hate and slanderous contents exhibit poor quality of stories. Such humans are spiritually wandering lost, polluting themselves with their own filth and sinking in life with weight of their stupid mistakes.

Gurbani says "Har ké sévak jo har bʰaaé ṫinĥ kee kaṫʰaa niraaree ré........ “Those who are pleasing to the Lord are the servants of the Lord; their story is unique and singular. They do not come and go, and they never die; they remain with the Supreme Lord God. SGGS Ang855

Gursikʰaa man vaaḋʰaaeeaa jin méraa saṫguroo ditʰaa raam raajé. The minds of the Gursikhs rejoice, because they have seen my True Guru, O Lord King. If someone recites to them the story of the Lord’s name, it seems so sweet to the mind of those Gursikhs. SGGS Ang451

Well written Sir Davinder Singh... And i recall it very well - you are a great listener and with your attentive lstnening, you break the wall of 'stranger body', making the other your own close ally.

STORY TELLING and CAPACITY OF STORY are two of the most sought qualities of humans, that's how we evolved over generations.

Irrespective of age - 6 yrs or 60 yrs, we need both the qualities - first to relieve self from any baggage (telling a story) and second to help others to come out of any mental block.

Thanks for touching this nice topic, helping us recall this imp trait of humanity. Regards,

Mohit Grover
