STAYING IN TOUCH

Kids in a village would quite often gather around an elderly man living alone listening to his stories attentively and try adopting the moral of the stories in their every day living. One such story was about ‘staying in touch’ which  made reference to a period decades ago where people of a prosperous kingdom were turning rude, jealous, cheating, hating and even getting violent harming their own. The people were losing touch in doing their regular Bhakti & Simran in remembering their Creator. The Gods in a joint meeting decided to awaken the people and it was decided Lord Indra be asked to stop rainfall until people reach out to them in pain and suffering. Lord Indra asked for how long and who will inform me. It was decided Shivji’s shank is loud enough, so when he blows the ‘shank’ hearing it Lord Indra can make rain fall on the kingdom.

Seasons went by and there was no rain. Being a prosperous kingdom people had resources and all thought it will rain soon and they would overcome the period of drought. Soon water tables depleted all over and no farmer could grow anything. With time the suffering and pain was beginning to show in most households. Handful families who continued with their Naam Simran were stronger in overcoming the pain and suffering, looking at them a few others took to reaching out to their Lord. The heavens were watching over and one day Parvatiji saw a farmer going to his farm and ploughing his barren field. The heavens were astonished and it was decided Parvatiji goes to find more about this. Disguised Parvatiji asks the farmer the land is dry, there is no water and no sign of rainfall to happen what in the world makes you plough the field. The farmer responded “it will rain someday is my belief, but my concern was I am staying out of touch with my field activities, what if I forget how to plough, what if it rain falls and staying out of touch the fields are not ready enough”.

On return Parvitiji shared details and Shivji thought I too am not staying in touch playing the shank. It's been a long time what if I lose my touch. He decided to try it softly but that was loud enough for Lord Indra to hear who thought it was a signal from Shivji and he made rain happen over the kingdom.

‘Staying in touch’ is more genuine and sincere expression than ‘keeping in touch’. Whilst stay in touch implies regular contact, keep in touch means occasional connect. The farmer staying in touch with his lord had his beliefs in place that it will rain. He was in peace with his suffering and could think differently thus exercising his actions of staying in touch with his livelihood which helped his family and all around.

All beings can confront terrible hardships and quite likely then no one offers any support. Friends turn enemies, relatives too can desert all support and earthly hope can seem lost. Waiting with open hands is the divine, start young and never forget God from your mind. He holds all, in the power of His hand. In olden days elders realized staying in touch they felt better physically and would feel less depressed leading to a greater degree of support and connection psychologically.

The elderly man concluded by blessing the children wishing they stay in touch expressing their love affection, emotions and respect with their Lord, parents and all around.

“Seek His Shelter, O my mind; there is no other as Great as He”.
