Teach us O Lord the discipline of patience – for the wait is often harder than to work.
The world is increasingly valuing speed, instant gratification and patience seems hard stuff for many.
Patience is a skill and virtue that helps one accept things can happen in a different order than the one you have in mind. When one distances patience, it results in messing the self not to mention more disappointing consequences while working impatiently with others. Lack of patience by a house wife or a team leader, the ripple effect down the line on work becomes less enjoyable and difficult.
The easy observant qualities seen in people with lack of patience are: stress, exhaustion or burnouts, agitation irritability, anxiety, restlessness, sleep problems, intolerance, aging process, low self-esteem, either loss of appetite or eating too much etc. Why invite detrimental effects on physical well-being when patience and perseverance have magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish.
Patience is a form of wisdom. It demonstrates that we understand and accept the fact that sometimes things must unfold in their own time. Our willingness to wait reveals the values we place on what we are waiting for. There are many to-be parents who do not take a sex determination test, rule or no rule it is by their choice not to. A prayer of a healthy blessed child is all they ask from their lord and be patient to experience Gods miracle in which the mother participates.
A media house was having its team meeting after hours of its Opinion Poll screening. Imagine a young junior journalist puts her hand up and speaks. Patience is an essential skill for journalists, why display our impatience by producing Opinion poll / Exit polls Gyan. It’s not opinion polls that determine the outcome of elections, its votes in the ballot box. Why not wait for those results patiently. Hours of wasteful reporting & discussions offering more air time for verbal hatred expressions by political parties justifies only to please our advertisement sponsors and media house owners.
What should have been done looking at the poor Voter turnouts below 50% in some regions is to cover those regions to know why a voter does not want to exercise his right. Educating the voter the need to exercise his right even if it means to press the NOTA button (None Of The Above) on a ballot box. A voter’s education is more important than an opinion poll for the impatient.
Patience is not only about the ability to wait but the ability to keep good attitude while waiting. Many a Creator’s nature reflects patience too. Watch the trees, shade leaves during autumn, stand leafless in winter and wait patiently for the spring, summer to arrive.
Gurbani says “Sabar manjʰ kamaaṇ é sabar kaa neehṇo…... ‘Within yourself, make patience the bow, and make patience the bowstring. Make patience the arrow, the Creator will not let you miss the target. Those who are patient abide in patience; in this way, they burn their bodies. They are close to the Lord, but they do not reveal their secret to anyone. Let patience be your purpose in life; implant this within your being. In this way, you will grow into a great river; you will not break off into a tiny stream”. SGGS Ang1384
The Power of Patience calls on us to claim our time our priorities and our ability to respond to life firmly and better with grounded sense easing our hardships, and daily hassles better.
