CHANGING ROOM

The changing room, the fitting room or the dressing room is quite a happy and happening place for many. It is a place for some where dreams come true. Dressing to new styles is a way to express who you are without having to speak and as we adapt to understanding of the changing room one realizes, it is not about what size you wear it’s about how you wear your size.

For those who reason life is too short for wearing boring clothes their changing rooms experience frequent changes of outfits. Feeling better after making a dressing up effort works for some as therapy and there are also those for whom dressing up is all about wearing confidence and for one to many it’s all about impressing others.

Genuine are those who try on outfits in stores until they find the one that screams ME, however many do not buy but extensively use changing rooms to fill selfie cupboards trying out outfits, taking pictures and then posting them. Each morning some dress to become a different person – fashion helps. Although life is not a dress rehearsal, fashion for some is the amour to survive the reality of everyday life. There are also those dressing the soul with an attire of good karmas (actions) not just for looks but being the different person.

The thoughts and actions in draping the soul reflect who you are truly deep down. The soul dressing in a way actually feels like you, an individual who knows self. If we relate to a wise man’s saying ‘Life is a changing room, that’s all it is for eternity’ then the soul dressing is important for every human. The quality of being graceful with soulful attire and humbly stylish in external appearance makes a true combination of elegance of an individual beautiful inside and outside.

One thing common in creators changing room life and the changing room we dress in outfits each day is ‘change’. To alter our outfits we wear on our body someone else could alter them for you but it is only the self who can work to make internal alterations. Life changes as much as you want it, from growing and exposing new capabilities, or improvising and learning new skills to fit into ever changing outer conditions. Human beings have a complicated relationship with change hence it takes time for most to realise; it is hard at first, messy in middle and gorgeous at the end. Change can teach us to adapt and help us develop resilience, but we need to look the mirror in the changing rooms all the time.

Gurbani guides us in managing our changing rooms. jin upaa-ee maydnee so-ee saar karay-i…... “The One who created the world, takes care of it. Meditate in remembrance on the One Lord, O Siblings of Destiny; there is none other than Him. So eat the food of the Shabad and goodness; eating it, you shall remain satisfied forever. Dress yourself in the Praise of the Lord. Forever and ever, it is radiant and bright; it is never polluted. I have intuitively earned the true wealth, which never decreases. The body is adorned with the Shabad, and is at peace forever and ever. O Nanak, the Gurmukh realizes the Lord, who reveals Himself. SGGS Ang1092
